CMU cites internal controls after employee charged in financial irregularities case

The Caribbean Maritime University says criminal charges brought against one of its staff members after a probe into suspected financial misconduct show that its internal governance and oversight arrangements are working.

The Financial Investigations Division said Kevan Anthony Panton, a CMU customer service officer, has been charged with several offences, among them embezzlement, falsifying accounts and conspiracy to defraud.

CMU President Professor Andrew Spencer said the university's own monitoring processes detected concerns involving student funds, after which the matter was sent to the FID.
