Meet records tumble at 2026 Tornadoes Invitational Swim Meet
Several meet records fell on day two of the 2026 Tornadoes Invitational Swim Meet at the National Aquatic Centre, where Jamaica’s age-group swimmers continued their push for Goodwill Championship qualification.
Commentators said the three-day meet was the second-to-last opportunity for many eight-and-under and nine-to-10 swimmers to post qualifying times for the Goodwill Championships, scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago in August. The morning session featured breaststroke, butterfly, individual medley, backstroke and freestyle relay events across several age groups.
Among the standout swims, William Wong was credited with an unofficial meet record in the boys 11-12 200-metre individual medley, touching in 2:34.32. Lisa Griffith of Tornadoes Masters also lowered the women’s masters 45-54 200-metre individual medley mark with an unofficial 3:35.16.
In the boys 13-and-over 200-metre individual medley, Joel Sinclair of Sharks produced an unofficial 2:24.10 to edge under the previous 13-14 record of 2:24.63. Skyler Richards, swimming unattached, also delivered a major backstroke performance, clocking an unofficial 30.15 in the girls 13-and-over 50-metre backstroke to beat the listed 15-17 mark of 30.69.
The younger swimmers also made their mark. Zuri Robertson of Y Speedos was announced as the girls eight-and-under 50-metre backstroke winner in 42.70, an unofficial meet record. Y Speedos later broke the girls eight-and-under 200-metre freestyle relay record in 2:30.68, more than 12 seconds inside the old standard.
Y Speedos continued their strong relay form in the boys nine-to-10 200-metre freestyle relay, where their A team touched in an unofficial record time of 2:12.86. The morning session closed with organisers confirming that competition would resume at 4 p.m. with the girls 11-12 100-metre breaststroke.
