2026 BYD Yuan Plus: EV with character
The Yuan Plus has been a global best-seller for the BYD until recently, only to be usurped by the introduction of its bigger brother, the Sealion 7.
Locally, it’s much the same, as the all-electric SUV constantly ranks at the top of the sales charts for the brand and for electric vehicles overall.
EXTERIOR
The Yuan Plus is styled conservatively, as are most mass market SUVs. It doesn’t get BYD’s Ocean-theme design language, because it’s not an ocean-named vehicle. Instead, The Yuan Plus receives what they term Dragon Face styling, which is visually safe, but attractive within its rather compact-looking footprint.
INTERIOR
On the inside, the Yuan Plus goes a bit more gung-ho in many ways. As this is an all-electric platform, one will notice that the compact dimensions of the exterior are not reflected inside. It feels roomier on the inside, that’s because it is. With no engine and transmission to impinge on cabin space, the Yuan Plus maximises the volume of its wheelbase for occupant comfort, and cargo carrying ability. The sense of space is further helped by the panoramic sunroof keeping it light and airy.
Once inside via keyless entry it would be easy to be swayed by the 12.8-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen; however, the Yuan Plus display is significantly more character in its cabin.
BYD calls it fitness-inspired, giving the interior sculpted two-tone surfaces, and adding a bit of whimsy. The latter can be felt in the rocker arm-like door handles, the air vent designs, and the lower door storage compartments that have strings which mimic a guitar. Yes, they can be strummed, providing hours of unmitigated fun with the right company.
Beyond that the BYD is brimming with technology and convenience features, many of which are usually options on premium-branded SUVs or just not available at all on many rivals, electric or otherwise. Automated functions start small, from the basics such as lights and wipers up to its driver assists systems that can guide the Yuan Plus for short periods of time. Those behind the wheel can monitor things stress-free from a 5-inch display, and use the wide variety of control methods to access said technology. The expected powered feature set is there as well.
ON THE ROAD
Operating the Yuan Plus is easy as its compact size reduces that bulky feel traditionally associated with SUVs. This is especially so given its electric drivetrain. The 201bhp and instant 228lb/ft of electric torque from its electric motor to its front wheels means the Yuan Plus always feels brisk when acceleration is called for, runs smoothly and quietly the rest of the time. Handling is more than sufficient for a vehicle of this type, with the suspension able to soak up rough Jamaican tarmac without significant disturbance to the occupants.
Driven faster, there is some fun to be had. More importantly, there is more than enough range for urban and rural driving, with over 400 kilometres of real-world range on hand.
The Yuan Plus can be charged at 7kWh for AC and DC fast up to 80 per cent in approximately 30 minutes.
VERDICT
It’s very easy to see why the Yuan Plus is a global sales success and continues to be. Its technical prowess is matched by a very competitive price point and driving characteristics from the class above. Most of all, it has some character where it counts to break free of the SUV monotony.
