Arnett Gardens and Jamaica Defence Force FC were locked in a hard-fought Popeyes Challenge Cup quarter-final on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at the J. Wray & Nephew Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, with the home side trying to turn youth and home support into a place in the last four.

The match opened a CVM TV double-header at the venue, ahead of Montego Bay United against Jamaica Premier League champions Portmore United. At Drax Hall, Molynes United came from behind to beat True Juice FC 2-1, while Chapelton and Mount Pleasant were also listed on the quarter-final schedule.

Arnett entered the contest leaning heavily on young players. Coach Philip Williams said the tournament gave the squad a chance to chase local silverware and allow emerging players to prove they could handle top-flight football. Shadiko Wizard said the team was excited, hungry and focused on lifting the trophy. Teammates Ronaldo Lawrence and Chevron Watson also spoke about the boost a title would give the players and the community.

Goalkeeper and captain Jaden White said Arnett understood the pressure from their demanding fan base, but believed the younger players were ready. He described knockout football as simple: one team advances and the other is eliminated.

JDF arrived with confidence after beating Cavalier 1-0 at Stadium East in the previous round. Their camp rejected the idea that the fixture was simply David versus Goliath, with team manager Captain TJ Davis saying the soldiers were “Goliaths” in their own right. Coach Cecil Storage said JDF were prepared physically, mentally, tactically and technically to face another Premier League opponent.

The first half ended 0-0, though Arnett had the clearest chance when Giovani Taylor’s volley struck the underside of the crossbar and his follow-up header was saved by goalkeeper Ben Morai Gibbs. Antonio Mitchell was booked for Arnett in the 29th minute, and a member of the Arnett technical staff was later sent off.

JDF created danger from set pieces and wide areas, while Arnett enjoyed more possession but often lacked precision in the final third. With the game still scoreless deep into the second half, both teams used substitutions in search of a breakthrough.
