March Pen curfew follows fatal shooting of Ascot High teacher Roshane Beckford
Sections of March Pen in St. Catherine have been placed under a 48-hour curfew as security forces respond to the fatal shooting of 35-year-old Roshane Beckford, a physical education teacher at Ascot High School.
The restriction began at 6 p.m. on Friday and is scheduled to run until 6 p.m. on Sunday. It covers parts of the community where the authorities say additional security measures are now in place.
Beckford was killed in March Pen on Friday. Reports indicate that he had gone to another section of the community after being told that someone there needed his help. While in the area, he was attacked by men armed with guns, who opened fire and hit him.
He was taken to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Police say the investigation is continuing. However, investigators believe the shooting may be connected to continuing tensions involving residents in sections of March Pen.
After the killing, the authorities moved to restrict movement in parts of the community in an effort to calm the area and support ongoing security operations. The zones named under the curfew include Salt Island Road, the Spanish Town bypass and Salt Pond.
Residents in the affected locations are being asked to obey the curfew instructions while members of the security forces remain deployed throughout the period.
