Three heavyweight outcomes shaped the FIFA World Cup knockout stage on June 29, 2026, as Brazil survived a late scare against Japan while Germany and the Netherlands both fell in penalty shootouts.

Brazil came from behind to defeat Japan 2-1 and reach the round of 16. Japan took the lead through a strike from outside the box after a turnover in Brazil’s buildup, with analysts noting Casemiro had pushed high and could not recover in time. Carlo Ancelotti’s side levelled when Casemiro headed in from a cross after Brazil overloaded the left flank, and Gabriel Martinelli scored what was described as the latest winning goal in normal time of a World Cup knockout match on record since 1966. Brazil finished with roughly 69% possession, 19 shots and seven on target. Ancelotti brought on Endrick and Martinelli at half-time to add width and quicker ball movement, changes guests on CVM’s football panel credited with turning the match.

Germany’s campaign ended in a shootout loss to Paraguay after a 1-1 draw. Julio Enciso put Paraguay ahead in the 42nd minute before Kai Havertz equalised in the 54th. Jonathan Tah thought he had won it in extra time, but the goal was chalked off after video review for contact between Anton and the Paraguay goalkeeper at a set piece. Former FIFA referee Victor Stewart said contact occurred but argued it did not affect the header, while Brent Sancho called the decision soft. Both sides missed multiple penalties before Paraguay advanced in sudden death. Goalkeeper Orlando Gil was widely praised for his saves from the spot.

Morocco also progressed on penalties after drawing 1-1 with the Netherlands in extra time. Cody Gakpo had put the Dutch ahead before Morocco equalised. Morocco will face Canada in the round of 16; Brazil await the winner of Ivory Coast versus Norway.
