Centenarian among honourees at Centenarian Storytelling Series in St Ann

Now in its second year, the Custos Commando Initiative: Centenarian Storytelling Series recently took place at the Bamboo Blu in Mammee Bay, St Ann.

According to Custos of St Ann, Joseph Issa, the initiative is held to preserve the rich history of Jamaica.

“Our Jamaican history is rich and powerful, and our centenarians possess this rich history as they have lived it. As such, they are able to provide firsthand accounts of historical events, culture traditions and social changes. In telling their stories, we benefit greatly,” Issa told Observer Online on Friday.

“We learn a lot from our ancients and our elders,” said Issa. “The centenarians, through storytelling, provide us with lessons of resilience, golden nuggets for health and tips to keep our hearts grounded with the passing of time.”

“This is an amazing experience and not many families have centenarians. The storytelling series provides youths (and adults) with the opportunity to interact with the elders and to learn true life lessons, which they can impart when they get older. It also provides the opportunity for youths to respect and honour our community legends,” he added.

More than 50 people were in attendance at the event including centenarians, their family members, caregivers, students, and community representatives.

“St Ann is widely recognised as one of the parishes with the highest longevity in Jamaica, with one of the country’s largest populations of centenarians. This initiative highlights that remarkable legacy while promoting healthy aging and recognising St Ann as a parish where longevity is both celebrated and valued,” Issa stated.

Aside from highlighting and showing appreciation for the centenarians, their caregivers and relatives, various groups and agencies who assist with elderly care and support, were also acknowledged.
