Cavalier book JPL semi-final spot as Ainsworth free kick seals 4-2 aggregate over Waterhouse

Cavalier are through to the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) semi-finals after a 2-0 victory over Waterhouse in the second leg of their quarter-final on Wednesday at the National Stadium, securing a 4-2 win on aggregate.
Dwayne Allen put the reigning champions ahead in the 29th minute, and Christopher Ainsworth added insurance from a set piece in the 79th to wrap up the result.
Assistant coach David Laylor praised the squad’s mentality after the match. "The players really turned up. All of them. They turned up and they delivered. You could see the difference in how they play. You saw the real Cavalier come out today (Wednesday)," he said.
Waterhouse controlled much of the opening period, probing for gaps and keeping the ball moving, but Cavalier stood up to the pressure better than in earlier meetings and remained a threat whenever play broke their way.
The breakthrough came when Allen met a long delivery inside the area. Roje Williams blocked the initial header, yet the ball dropped kindly for the midfielder, who finished from point-blank range.
The goal unsettled Waterhouse for a stretch. They eventually settled into their patterns again, though Cavalier’s back line limited clear opportunities.
After the break the pattern held: Waterhouse hunted an equaliser while Cavalier stayed compact and pounced on counter-attacks. As time wore on, the visitors grew sharper. Neron Barrow whipped in a dangerous cross that was turned behind for a corner.
From the resulting set piece, Cavalier survived a scramble in the box before clearing their lines. Soon after, Javane Bryan got in behind the defence, only to see his shot diverted wide. Kimarley Scott then raced clear, rounded Williams, but retreating defenders blocked a straightforward finish.
Cavalier made the game safe shortly afterwards when they won a free kick just outside the penalty area. Ainsworth bent the ball beyond Williams for a 2-0 lead.
Waterhouse pressed late and went close through Denardo Thomas and Williams, yet Cavalier saw out the match without conceding and advanced to the last four.
Waterhouse head coach Javier Ainstien pointed to defensive lapses and missed chances over the two legs. "Congratulations to Cavalier, a very organised and disciplined team. The difference between them and us in these two matches is, they defended better than us. These two matches, we weren't the same team. At the same time, we created the chances, but we weren't defending good in these two matches. But my pain is that we finished without order, and that is the difference between us and Cavalier," he said.
Cavalier will meet Montego Bay United in the semi-finals.
