Constable Andrew Wilson charged with murder in Latoya Bulgin killing
Constable Andrew Wilson has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of 45-year-old Latoya Bulgin in Granville, St. James. The Director of Public Prosecutions made the ruling on Monday, May 29, 2026, following the May 17 incident.
Bulgin, who was also known as Buju, was shot while she was inside her motor vehicle. The shooting was captured on video and prompted strong public concern in Jamaica and across the region, with stakeholders pressing for a speedy investigation and justice for her relatives.
Wilson, 35, was interdicted immediately after the incident. Two other police personnel who were involved in the matter could also face charges, although the possible offences have not yet been disclosed.
In other developments, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Kamina Johnson Smith sought to reassure the public about the USS Nimitz being in Jamaica. She said the vessel was in Kingston from June 1 to June 5 on a friendship and goodwill visit, and was supporting humanitarian and community outreach activities during its stay.
Johnson Smith also said UWI Mona and the Caribbean School of Nursing at the University of Technology, Jamaica, had agreed to consider eligible Jamaican students affected by economic difficulties in Cuba. She said students needing help with academic records should contact the Jamaican embassy, while the Government’s offer of a one-way flight home remains available.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade is also increasing public education on bush fire prevention as hotter, drier weather is expected. Superintendent Emilio Ebanks said St. Catherine and St. Elizabeth have recorded high bush fire numbers in recent years, and residents should call firefighters as soon as a blaze is seen rather than waiting until it spreads.
Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said 20,000 hotel rooms are expected to be added to Jamaica’s room stock, while other airlines have shown interest in space left after Spirit ended operations. Regionally, Barbados has opened bidding for 19 ultra-deepwater oil and gas blocks. Internationally, researchers are developing three vaccines for a rare Ebola strain linked to nearly 250 deaths.
