CVM Sunrise’s June 5 broadcast brought together national news, sport, culture and entertainment, including fresh updates on emergency shelters, police hotline abuse, Jamaican performances overseas, Caribbean literature and local entrepreneurship.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie announced an extra $60 million for municipal corporations to improve emergency shelter accommodation before the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. The funds are to support bedding and related supplies, while purpose-built shelters are planned for Clarendon, St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland at an estimated combined cost of $1 billion.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force also warned against prank and nuisance calls to 119. Assistant Commissioner Gary Francis said the Emergency Communication Centre receives about 5,000 calls daily, with roughly 65 per cent not being genuine emergencies. Police said false reports and hoaxes delay responses to real crises.

In education, the Open Door University scholarship was announced for eligible students from Lyssons, St. Thomas, and nearby communities. The award offers up to $300,000 for tertiary studies, with applications due by Sunday, June 28.

Sport featured strongly. ESPN ranked Usain Bolt ninth among the greatest athletes of the 21st century, while Megan Simmonds won the women’s 100m hurdles at the Rome Diamond League in a season’s best 12.50 seconds. Jamaica’s women pool players also dominated the Queen of the Green tournament in Barbados, with Whitney Tracey Morris taking the 2026 crown.

The programme also highlighted the Popeye’s Challenge Cup, where JDF, Mount Pleasant, Montego Bay United and Molynes United advanced to the semi-finals. Cultural segments featured Read Caribbean Month recommendations from Shenique Shanté Sinclair, young crochet entrepreneur Christa Robinson of Crafts by Christa, and artiste Nigy Boy ahead of his Club Mecca headline performance.
