Barry Wint Scholar Yanique Jackson Says Nephew's Final Words Fueled Her Medical Journey
Yanique Jackson, a Dr. Barry Wint Scholar on the final stretch of her medical degree, has pointed to her nephew's illness and his last message to her as the force behind her pursuit of medicine.
Jackson shared her account while delivering a testimonial on behalf of the first-year cohort. She said her nephew was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2017 and received treatment at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).
Both he and the wider family endured a difficult period during his illness. Jackson credited the doctors, nurses, and full hospital team with helping him through his final days.
Before he died, he told her, "Auntie Kim, you're going to be the best doctor ever." She said that promise has carried her through the years since and remains central to why she pressed on with medical school.
Jackson was congratulated on nearing completion of her degree and on the way she represented the first-year group through her remarks.
