Landlord Pleads Guilty: An 84-year-old landlord from Spanish Town has pleaded guilty to assault after admitting that he threw hot water on his tenant during a dispute earlier this year.
Albert Thomas entered the guilty plea when he appeared before Acting Senior Parish Court Judge Janelle Nelson-Gayle on Tuesday.
During the hearing, Thomas openly admitted to the offence, telling the court that he acted in retaliation after the tenant allegedly threw dirty water on him about a week earlier.
“Your Honour, he threw dirty water on me about a week before, so I heated the water and threw it on him,” Thomas said.
The case was postponed until July 21 to allow for the preparation of a social enquiry report ahead of sentencing.
Judge Nelson-Gayle also raised concerns about Thomas’ physical condition and instructed his relatives to ensure that funds are available when he returns to court.
The judge noted that while the complainant is seeking $800,000 in compensation, the medical evidence presented does not support that amount. However, she indicated that compensation would still be appropriate for the injuries suffered.
According to court allegations, the incident occurred on April 21 when an argument developed between Thomas and the complainant at their residence.
During the confrontation, Thomas allegedly threw hot water on the man, causing burns to his right hand and leg.
The injured tenant was taken to hospital, where he received treatment.
Following an investigation, Thomas was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and is expected to return to court on July 21 for sentencing.
