Operation CALM Targets Hurricane Flood Risk Across Jamaica
The Government of Jamaica has unveiled a new island-wide programme aimed at reducing the damage caused by hurricane-related flooding, with senior ministers pledging their commitment to making it work.
Operation CALM, short for Cleaning, Advising, Leveraging, and Maintaining, is being led by the Ministry of Local Government and targets the flood risks that have become all too familiar for Jamaican communities, particularly following the devastation left by Hurricane Melissa.
Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness spoke about the initiative at the National Solid Waste Management Authority and Municipal Police Management Long Service Awards, outlining the programme's goals and the difference he hopes it will make across the country. He also announced the handover of new vehicles to strengthen the NSWMA's operations on the ground.
Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie echoed the Prime Minister's optimism, expressing confidence that Operation CALM will deliver meaningful results for communities vulnerable to flooding.
