Governor-General urges Jamaicans to rebuild with shared resolve after Melissa

His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, Governor-General, has urged Jamaicans to stand together with resilient purpose as the country recovers from the severe damage wrought by Hurricane Melissa.

The appeal was conveyed by the Hon. Marcia Bennett, Custos Rotulorum for St. Thomas, during the National Emancipation and Independence Thanksgiving Church Service on Sunday (July 26) at the Olson Memorial Church of God on Hope Road in St. Andrew.

Linking his remarks to this year’s national theme, ‘United in Celebrating Resilience,’ the Governor-General observed that “our national story has never been defined by the absence of hardship.” Emancipation in 1838 brought an end to slavery and Independence in 1962 confirmed Jamaica’s sovereignty, he said, yet each landmark demanded that Jamaicans accept ownership of their future despite trying times.

“Today, 2026, another generation confronts a different challenge as families rebuild homes, businesses restore livelihoods, and communities recover… Though the circumstances have changed, one truth remains constant, the Jamaican spirit has always found strength in adversity,” he pointed out.

Resilience, he added, is more than weathering difficulty. It depends on joint action by neighbours, churches, emergency workers and ordinary citizens who have stepped forward to aid recovery islandwide.

“Resilience, therefore, is not simply survival. It is the determination to rebuild, to restore, and to believe that tomorrow can be better than today,” the Governor-General said.

He cautioned that Emancipation and Independence observances must not push aside those still mourning and reconstructing after the storm. Rather, the season should deepen the country’s dedication to compassion, service and togetherness.

“May Almighty God continue to bless our beloved land and people, strengthen every community on the path to recovery, and guide Jamaica into a future marked by peace, justice, and enduring hope,” the Governor-General said.
