Immaculate High & Bamboo Primary Top National School Moves Day Competition

St. Ann

Kingston, Jamaica. Friday, May 1, 2026: Immaculate Conception High School and Bamboo Primary School have emerged as the winners of the National School Moves Day Competition, which formed part of National School Moves Day, a school-led observance under the Jamaica Moves in Schools programme. On Friday, April 24, during which participating institutions dedicated at least 60 minutes to structured physical activity in support of student health and wellness.

Second place was awarded to Guy’s Hill High School and Broughton Primary School, while third place went to Maggoty High School and Seaside Primary School.

Approximately 98 schools, both primary and secondary, inclusive of students, teachers, and ancillary staff in wider school communities, participated in a variety of exercises, games, and team-based activities, reinforcing the importance of movement for physical and mental well-being.

The competition brought a successful conclusion to the School Moves Day 2026 focus, marked by a dynamic two-phase approach that engaged schools across the island in both planning and action to promote physical activity among students.

Observed under the theme “Every School Moving: Move Your Way, Every Day,” this year’s initiative, led by the Ministry of Health and Wellness in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, placed strong emphasis on sustainability by encouraging schools to integrate physical activity into their daily routines.

It’s first phase, the “Move Your Way: National School Moves Day Plan Competition,” invited schools to develop and submit structured physical activity plans. This phase fostered creativity, inclusivity, and whole-school engagement, ensuring that institutions were not only participating but also actively designing approaches tailored to their unique environments.

The Ministry commends all participating schools for their enthusiasm and dedication in making this year’s National School Moves Day a resounding success. The initiative continues to play a critical role in addressing physical inactivity among Jamaican children and adolescents while supporting improved health outcomes and academic performance.

Schools are encouraged to build on this momentum by continuing to implement their physical activity plans and embedding movement into daily school life beyond the commemorative day.
