KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica has recorded 49 fewer road deaths up to June 5 than it did over the corresponding stretch of 2025, according to the Island Traffic Authority (ITA).
The agency's latest daily crash figures show a 30 per cent reduction in people killed on the roads, with the deaths coming from 103 fatal crashes. The ITA said the number of fatal crashes has also fallen by 30 per cent so far this year.
If that pace of decline continues to the end of the year, Jamaica could finish below 300 road fatalities for the first time since 2012, when 260 people lost their lives in crashes.
Motorcyclists remain the largest group among those killed, accounting for 30 deaths, or 26 per cent of the total, since January. Pedestrians follow with 28 deaths, or 25 per cent. Private motor vehicle drivers represent 24 deaths, or 21 per cent, while passengers in private motor vehicles account for 20 deaths, or 18 per cent. Pedalcyclists have recorded five deaths, equal to four per cent.
The ITA said vulnerable road users — pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists and pillion passengers taken together — make up 57 per cent of all road deaths since the year began. Males account for 83 per cent of fatalities, while females account for 17 per cent.
