Douglas and Card put Jamaica on brink of historic U20 100m double

Jamaican women have taken the World Under-20 Championships 100 metres title at each of the last four editions. Briana Williams struck gold in 2018, Tina Clayton won consecutively in 2021 and 2022, and Alana Reid completed the streak at the most recent meet in Lima, Peru.

The men’s sprint has been far harder to claim. Jamaica has collected that title only twice, both times through Dexter Lee, who won in 2008 and again in 2010.

At this year’s championships in Eugene, Oregon, the island could join exclusive company. The United States remains the sole nation to have captured both the men’s and women’s 100 metres crowns at one World Under-20 Championships, doing so in Bydgoszcz in 2016 when Candace Hill and Noah Lyles took gold. No other country has matched that double at a single edition of the meet.

Shanoya Douglas and Gary Card give Jamaica a realistic path to becoming the second. Both arrive in Eugene ranked as the world leaders and are strongly placed to contest the finals.

Douglas is the lone woman on the entry list with a sub-11-second mark, holding a personal best of 10.98. The main obstacle to her gold medal push is expected to be Mia Maxwell of the United States, whose best stands at 11.08.

Card owns the quickest time among the men’s field at 9.93 seconds and is the only competitor entered who has dipped under 10 seconds. He is likely to face stern challenges from Nigeria’s John Caleb (10.00), Tate Taylor of the United States (10.04), and South Africa’s Marko Ferreira (10.04).

A sweep would etch both athletes into championship history. Two years ago in Lima, Peru, Douglas and Card already shared podium glory as members of Jamaica’s victorious 4x100 metres relay teams.
