Jamaican travellers were advised to expect possible flight delays on July 16 as the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority prepared to restrict sections of the country’s airspace during SpaceX’s planned Starship Flight 13 launch from Texas. Restrictions were due to begin at 5:25 p.m., with the launch window running from 5:45 p.m. to 7:56 p.m. Flights involving Sangster, Norman Manley and Ian Fleming international airports could be delayed, rerouted or adjusted until the airspace was declared safe. Alternative launch dates were identified from July 17 to 22.

In education, East Central St. James MP Edmund Bartlett announced a $30-million, two-year initiative marking the 30th anniversary of his constituency’s education programme. The funding will support early-childhood infrastructure and provide 30 tertiary scholarships based on academic performance and financial need.

STATIN reported that Jamaica’s Consumer Price Index rose by 0.8 per cent in June. Transport recorded the largest increase at 4.3 per cent, driven by higher route-taxi and hackney-carriage fares. Food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 0.7 per cent, while annual inflation reached 6.7 per cent for June 2025 to June 2026.

The Students’ Loan Bureau told Parliament’s Public Administration and Appropriations Committee that more than half its loan portfolio was delinquent. Executive director Nikisha Walsh cited financial hardship, unstable earnings and competing household expenses among the reasons borrowers gave. Committee members questioned interest rates reaching 9.5 per cent and called for more flexible engagement with borrowers.

Agriculture Minister Floyd Green also launched a heifer-distribution project intended to increase domestic milk production. Farmers selected for the programme will receive animals without charge as part of efforts to revive Jamaica’s dairy sector, which currently produces about 13 million litres annually.

In sport, Argentina defeated England 2-1 to reach the World Cup final against Spain. Enzo Fernandez equalised before Lautaro Martinez scored in stoppage time. West Indies Women also completed a 3-0 ODI series sweep of Ireland, with Stafanie Taylor making 105 as the Caribbean side posted 257 and dismissed Ireland for 193.

Reggae Sumfest stage production manager Martin Lewis said preparations at Plantation Cove, St. Ann, were on schedule. Organisers arranged on-site parking, park-and-ride services, multiple food courts and security support for the July 18 event.
