Jamaican authorities are investigating several serious incidents reported between Friday and Saturday, including a fatal police confrontation in Clarendon, a deadly hit-and-run in St. Ann, a suspected drowning in St. Catherine and new developments in the murder case involving UTech Jamaica student Michael “Boopsy” Patterson.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force said 23-year-old O’Neal Hamilton, otherwise called “AJ” or “Putta”, a labourer of Oliver Gardens in May Pen, was fatally shot during an operation in the Effortville area on Friday. Police said members of the Area 3 anti-fugitive apprehension team came under gunfire and returned fire. An officer was hit in the chest area, but the bullet struck his protective vest. He was treated at hospital and remains stable. Hamilton was found with gunshot injuries and later pronounced dead at hospital. Police said a firearm was seized and alleged Hamilton was connected to criminal activities in Area 3, including a robbery at a bar on S.W. Crescent in May Pen earlier Friday. INDECOM has been notified.

In St. Ann, police are looking for the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run on Main Street in Ocho Rios on Saturday morning. Investigators said the driver left the scene and is being asked to surrender at the nearest police station. Up to June 12, Jamaica had recorded 125 road deaths from 113 fatal crashes, a 33.3 per cent reduction compared with the similar period in 2025.

St. Catherine police are also probing the suspected drowning of 52-year-old Devon MacDonald, an unemployed man of Tra District. Police said MacDonald, who reportedly had epilepsy and a mental illness and had recently left hospital, went to a river about 5:05 p.m. Friday to bathe. Passers-by later saw him floating in the water. Riverdale police responded, and his fully clothed body was found face down before the scene was processed and the body removed.

A third accused, Melvin Chisum, has been charged with misprision of felony in the February murder investigation of security guard and engineering student Michael Patterson. Barbara Gardner and Tevin Austin, both of Walderston, Manchester, face multiple charges including murder, conspiracy to murder, firearm offences, robbery with aggravation, motor vehicle larceny, receiving stolen property and unauthorised access to computer data. The three are to appear in the Corporate Area Gun Court on June 26, 2026. Patterson’s decomposing body was found on February 23 in a canal near the National Irrigation Reservoir in Hartlands, St. Catherine, and his motor car was later found in Manchester.

The Child Protection and Family Services Agency also appealed for stronger action against domestic violence following the death of 13-year-old Excelsior High student Chameleia Paul. She died on June 9 from injuries sustained in a May 9 stabbing incident at her Bayshore Park, St. Andrew, home while reportedly trying to intervene in a domestic dispute. A man who surrendered to police has been charged with murder. CPFSA head Laura Adams Thomas urged families and communities to protect children, seek help early and report suspected abuse through 211, WhatsApp or phone at 876-878-2882 or 876-822-7031, email [email protected], or the agency’s social pages.
