Jamaican cast members discuss The Harder They Come musical in the UK
Jamaican performer and choreographer Nisha Yen Jones has been working in Britain as associate choreographer on The Harder They Come, the stage musical based on the celebrated Jamaican film. The production is being performed at Stratford East theatre, with a cast that includes Jamaican and wider Caribbean talent.
Jones spoke with cast members about the weight of presenting the story after the recent passing of Sir Jimmy Cliff, whose work remains central to the film’s legacy. Nat Jones, who performs as Ivan, the character associated with Cliff, said taking on the role carried both pressure and pride. He described it as “an absolute honor” and said the team hoped to respect the film’s standing and Cliff’s original performance.
The cast also reflected on the music that drives the show. Nat Jones said audience response is especially strong for The Harder They Come, while also naming Rebel in Me and In Limbo among the numbers he enjoys. Aisha Davis, who performs as Elsa and also covers Daisy, said she enjoys watching the title number and singing Pressure Drop. Simon Anthony singled out Shanty Town, while Israelites was also mentioned during the discussion.
Davis, known in Jamaica as an artist who has performed with figures including Buju Banton and Bounty Killer, said the move into an ensemble role was not unfamiliar because of her background in Jamaican musical theatre and dance. She said the larger British theatre environment brought a different scale, with a highly talented cast around her.
She also noted the personal importance of being part of an all-Black production, contrasting it with a previous job where she was the only Black cast member. The company described the production as a Caribbean mix, with Jamaicans joined by performers from places including St. Kitts and Trinidad.
Jones and the cast encouraged Jamaicans and Caribbean audiences in England to attend the Stratford East run, while also expressing openness to bringing the production to Jamaica for a future stint.
