Mark Golding calls for worker dignity and national unity in Labour Day 2026 message
Opposition Leader Mark Golding used his Labour Day 2026 message to honour Jamaican workers, reflect on the country's labour struggles, and urge national unity under this year's theme, “One people, one purpose, in all things Jamaica wins.”
Golding said Labour Day remains tied to the 1938 uprising, when ordinary Jamaicans challenged injustice and pressed for fairer pay, improved workplace conditions and respect. He said those events helped reshape national life, strengthened working-class representation, encouraged political organisation, and moved Jamaica closer to self-government and independence.
He noted that the holiday has become both a time for remembrance and a day of practical service. Across the island, he said, Jamaicans would be cleaning, painting, building, repairing and improving their communities, showing that national development cannot rest only with the state but must also involve citizens working together.
Golding also said the country must be honest about the pressures many people are facing. He pointed to families still recovering from last October's hurricane, including those living beneath leaking blue tarpaulins, and said rising living costs linked to conflict and international aggression continue to weigh heavily on households.
He said many workers are finding it difficult to cover their needs, while educated and ambitious young Jamaicans are looking for meaningful chances to build their lives at home instead of overseas, but are often left frustrated.
Golding said Labour Day should prompt Jamaica to consider whether work is providing real dignity, security and a route to a better standard of living. He expressed support for nurses, teachers, police officers, farmers, factory workers, hotel employees, taxi operators, vendors and small business owners, describing their contribution as central to the country.
The opposition leader said workers must have a stronger voice in national priorities, adding that he would continue advocating for policies aimed at a fairer society and stronger social cohesion.
Golding closed by saying Jamaica's history shows that collective action can help the country overcome hardship. He urged Jamaicans to renew their shared commitment on Labour Day 2026 and act in the national interest.
