Mark Golding honours Stephen Francis as Jamaica mourns legendary MVP track coach

Mark Golding, president of the Opposition People's National Party, is mourning the death of track and field coach Stephen Francis.

In a Facebook post, Golding said Francis's passing represents a profound loss for sport at home and abroad. "I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Coach Stephen Francis last night. Jamaica and the world have lost a giant of track and field," he wrote.

Golding described how Francis, widely known as "Franno," reshaped attitudes toward athlete development on the island. "Affectionately known as 'Franno', he revolutionised our sport by proving that world-class athletes could be developed right here at home in Jamaica. Whereas previously it was thought necessary to send our talent abroad for their development into international athletes, Coach Francis totally changed that mindset and led the way by building excellence locally".

The Opposition Leader highlighted Francis's work as co-founder and technical director of the MVP Track and Field Club, which he established in September 1999. Golding said Francis spent the decades that followed converting local talent into global performers and helping to produce several celebrated champions on the international stage.

He pointed to the medal tally as evidence of that influence, noting that MVP athletes secured more than 56 World Championship medals and 28 Olympic medals under Francis's leadership.

Golding also spoke to Francis's wider legacy beyond results. "Beyond the medals, 'Franno' gave our young athletes belief, discipline and opportunity. He showed that with vision, structure and hard work, coaching and athlete preparation right here in Jamaica sets the global standard."

He closed with condolences for those closest to the coach. "My thoughts and prayers are with his family, the entire MVP family, and the countless athletes whose lives he shaped. Rest in peace, Coach Francis. Thank you for your service to Jamaica."
