Lionel Messi wrote another striking page in his career on Tuesday, turning in a commanding display on the sport's biggest stage. The Argentina captain netted his first FIFA World Cup hat-trick, raising his tournament goals tally to 16 and drawing level with Germany's Miroslav Klose as the joint all-time leading scorer at the finals.
At 38, Messi still set the rhythm of the match and steered Argentina to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Algeria. The night brought further milestones as he became the first player to take part in six separate FIFA World Cups, moving ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in that category.
The achievement carried added meaning. It came exactly 20 years after his World Cup debut as a teenager at Germany 2006 and also marked his 200th international appearance for Argentina. His third goal arrived in the 76th minute when he converted a pass from substitute Nico González to complete the hat-trick and seal another landmark outing.
Across his touches, link-up play, and finishing, Messi showed that even after two decades on the international scene, his knack for reshaping football history remains as sharp as ever.
