MP Daryl Vaz backs regular blood donation for national supply
Member of Parliament Daryl Vaz has thrown his support behind a national push for blood donation, telling the public that giving blood should be a regular habit rather than something people do only when a relative is in crisis.
In a short message tied to the You're Somebody Type campaign, Vaz said hospitals need a steady pool of donors so that patients facing emergency surgery can receive transfusions when minutes count. He stressed that reserves are not built for one family at a time, but for anyone who may need blood without warning.
"It is very important that everybody gives blood—not just in an emergency for a family member or a loved one, but so that there can be enough blood for other people who require emergency surgery and need blood in order for that to happen," Vaz said.
He encouraged Jamaicans to set aside time to donate today and on an ongoing basis. Vaz described the process as quick and straightforward, noting that it involves little more than a brief needle stick.
"I encourage today and every day: take the time out and give some blood. It takes nothing—one little prick, and you're good to go," he added.
Health officials routinely warn that chronic shortfalls in donated blood can delay urgent care. Vaz's appeal aligns with efforts to widen the donor base beyond relatives who respond when someone they know is admitted to hospital.
