Nautical Star wins Labour Day Trophy after four-month break at Caymanas Park

Nautical Star made a successful return from a four-month break on Monday, landing the Labour Day Trophy feature at Caymanas Park in the overnight allowance event for three-year-olds and upward over seven furlongs.

The imported runner, who had not competed since winning the St. Catherine Cup over six furlongs in January, was sent off as the 4-5 favourite. Under two-time champion jockey Raddesh Roman, Nautical Star stayed close to the early pace before moving after American Aviator in the stretch.

American Aviator led into the lane, but Nautical Star challenged on the outside, took command inside the final furlong and drew away late. He won by three and a half lengths, with American Aviator finishing second.

Conditioned by former three-time champion trainer Anthony Nunes, the six-year-old dark bay recorded splits of 23.1, 46.2 and 1:11.3 before completing the trip in 1:25.1.

Roman said the horse's ability gave him confidence once he got away cleanly and found a good position. He said his aim was to settle Nautical Star before asking him for his main effort in the final three furlongs, adding that he considers the runner among the best horses in Jamaica.

Even so, Roman said the performance was not entirely satisfying and suggested more work may be needed to get Nautical Star back to his best.

Elsewhere on the card, apprentice Richie Shakes rode three winners, while trainer Carlton Cunningham saddled a double. Racing is scheduled to continue on Saturday.
