Official funeral honours Hugh Hart’s service to law, government and Jamaica
Jamaica paused to honour the Honourable Hugh Cecil Edmund Hart, OJ, at an official funeral service marked by hymns, scripture, prayers and tributes from public figures, legal colleagues and regional representatives.
The gathering acknowledged the presence of Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness and Mrs Juliet Holness, Opposition Leader Mark Golding and Mrs Golding, government ministers, members of the diplomatic corps and other public and private sector representatives. Condolences were also offered on behalf of Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen and Lady Allen, former Governor-General Sir Kenneth Hall and Lady Hall, and former Prime Minister PJ Patterson.
Tributes described Hart as an outstanding Jamaican whose national service included two terms as a senator, work as an adviser on bauxite matters, and ministerial responsibility for mining, energy and tourism. Speakers recalled his role during a difficult period for Jamaica’s bauxite and energy sectors, including efforts linked to the reopening of the Jamalco plant after Alcoa’s closure decision.
Hart was also remembered as a major figure in tourism development. One tribute credited him with helping to drive Jamaica toward the milestone of one million visitors, achieved in 1987, and with bringing the Concorde aircraft to Jamaica in 1986. Speakers also linked his contacts to the staging of a world music festival in Jamaica and support for the country’s 1984 Olympic team.
In the legal profession, Hart was praised as the founding senior partner of Hart Muirhead Fatta, established in 1989 with John Muirhead and George Fatta. Colleagues called him a brilliant commercial lawyer, master draftsman, gifted negotiator and problem solver who served clients across social and economic lines.
Representatives of the Organisation of Commonwealth Caribbean Bar Associations said Hart’s influence extended across Jamaica, Cayman and the wider region. The service closed with Christian prayers, national hymns and words of comfort to his children Lorraine, Justin and Belinda and the wider Hart family.
