Operation Iron Shield ramped up as Jamaica tracks 28 fewer murders

Security officials say Jamaica is recording roughly 28 fewer murders than at the same point last year, but they have concluded that sharper action is still needed if the country is to finish the year below a mandated ceiling of 120 killings.

That assessment, they said, prompted the launch of Operation Iron Shield. The drive is built around three pillars: suppression, prevention, and performance management.

On prevention, the emphasis is on reclaiming public space and maintaining a strong presence in communities identified as hotspots. Officials say that approach is already yielding notable gains on the ground.

They added that current work will be stepped up further. With the murder count trending downward, they expressed confidence that the year-end target of fewer than 120 can still be met as efforts continue through the remaining months of 2026.
