Paternity Case Challenges Romance Between Miss Thompson and Jamaican-American Mr Cole

A paternity dispute involving Miss Thompson, Mr Cole and her 10-month-old son, Jamal, is the focus of a Jacket Court episode examining whether the child is biologically connected to the named father.

The case centres on Mr Cole, described in the proceedings as a first-generation Jamaican-American who was born in the United States. He came to Jamaica hoping to better understand his family background and local culture. During that visit, he met Miss Thompson, and the two developed a romantic relationship.

The court was told that Miss Thompson later became pregnant and that the couple initially welcomed the news. However, uncertainty entered the relationship after Miss Thompson’s mother raised questions about whether Mr Cole was Jamal’s father. Miss Thompson brought the matter before the court to have the issue resolved.

Asked how the relationship began, Miss Thompson said she and Mr Cole connected quickly after their first meeting. She described him as someone who made her feel loved, protected and chosen, and said her intention was to build a lasting relationship with him, including marriage.

Mr Cole told the court that he came to Jamaica to connect with his roots and said he remained open to living on the island. He also said his family still had property in Jamaica. At the same time, he explained that he was finishing a bachelor’s degree in computer science in the United States and hoped to launch a technology start-up, possibly in California, after graduating.

When questioned about raising Jamal outside Jamaica, Mr Cole said the United States was not foreign to him because it was where he grew up. He argued that there would be support, opportunity and room for growth there.

Miss Thompson’s mother strongly opposed the idea of her daughter marrying Mr Cole, repeatedly interrupting the hearing before being warned to allow the proceedings to continue.
