PNP honours former St James West Central MP Arthur Nelson after death at 91

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People's National Party (PNP) is grieving the loss of Arthur Nelson, who formerly held the St James West Central seat in Parliament. Party leaders characterised the 91-year-old as a steadfast public figure whose restrained manner and sincere care for voters made a durable impression on national life.

The PNP said Nelson lived out a career devoted to his profession, his political organisation, and Jamaica. A trained professional engineer, he carried precision, moral strength, and practical judgment into his legislative duties. He secured the St James West Central constituency through back-to-back general election wins in 1993 and 1997.

In a statement released Sunday, the party spoke of Nelson's notable modesty. "In an era when appearances often matter more than actions, he was known to take the bus to Parliament, a quiet but telling statement about who he was and the values he held. He never sought to place himself above the people he served," the PNP said.

Officials also pointed to Nelson's lasting loyalty to the party beyond his years in office. During the 2020 general election campaign, he went back to St James West Central to back PNP candidates — a move the organisation said reflected his lifelong and steadfast commitment to both the party and the people of the seat.

The PNP sent sympathies to his wife, Barbara, their children Shaun, Mark, and Andrea, and to other relatives, friends, former colleagues, and residents of St James West Central.

"Arthur Nelson served with honour. He will be remembered with great affection and the highest respect. May he rest in eternal peace," the party said.
