INDECOM opens inquiry after Spanish Town police shooting leaves Quarry Hill man dead
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is examining a police shooting that left one man dead during a dawn raid in Quarry Hill, Spanish Town, St Catherine.
The victim has been named only as "Ren," a resident of the Quarry Hill area.
Police say that around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, officers from the St Catherine North Proactive Investigation Unit and the Area Fugitive Apprehension Team were in the community hunting gunmen, among them a wanted suspect.
At Port Henderson Glades Boulevard, law enforcement officials reported seeing two men climbing a fence at the back of a property. Officers challenged the pair, who police say then fired at them.
The officers moved to safety and shot back. When the exchange stopped, "Ren" was discovered with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.
A Taurus pistol, along with a magazine holding three 9mm rounds, was reportedly recovered from the scene.
"Ren" was rushed to Spanish Town Hospital but did not survive.
INDECOM said it has opened a formal investigation, as required whenever police use of force results in death.
