Jamaican Mountaineer Rohan Freeman Completes Second Mount Everest Summit

Rohan Freeman has added another major chapter to Jamaica’s mountaineering history by reaching the top of Mount Everest again. The Jamaican climber got to the summit at about 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

The achievement is being recorded as Freeman’s second successful climb to Everest’s peak, following his first ascent in 2009. Now in his late 50s, he has continued taking on punishing high-altitude expeditions while managing asthma, a condition he has faced throughout his climbing career.

Freeman is also recognised as the first Jamaican and African American to finish the Seven Summits challenge. His route into climbing came after he left Jamaica for the United States, where he studied civil engineering at the University of Connecticut and became involved in athletics before shifting to mountaineering.

His major climbs include Kilimanjaro in Africa in 2002, Mount McKinley in 2005, and Mount Elbrus and Aconcagua in 2006. He later summited Everest in 2009, Vinson Massif in 2011, and Carstensz Pyramid in 2012.
