Spanish Town Primary celebrates first national primary athletics title since 2019

Spanish Town Primary was feted on Monday after securing its first national primary athletics title since 2019 at the recently completed INSPORTS National Primary Championship at the National Stadium.

The school’s athletes and supporters paraded from the campus gates on White Church Street, moved through sections of Spanish Town and returned to the school, as the old capital marked the All-Island success.

Spanish Town took the championship by unseating Licens Primary. The St. Catherine-based team finished on 234 points, eight clear of Licens on 226, while Half-Way Tree Primary placed third with 105.5 points.

Joshua Williams led Spanish Town’s charge, earning boys’ MVP honours and sharing the overall MVP award with Ariana Lewis of Licens. Both athletes scored 24 points.

Williams won four gold medals, broke the boys’ long jump record and was also part of Spanish Town’s record-setting 4x200 metres relay team, which proved decisive in the championship race.

A school representative said the victory meant more than a trophy for the institution. “A win for Spanish Town Primary is a win for the entire community of Spanish Town,” the representative said, adding that the result should motivate both the young athletes and the wider community.

Supporters also expressed pride in the team’s effort, especially after a dramatic finish to the meet that included a disqualification, a protest and Spanish Town athletes featuring in the closing races.
