A 50-year-old man from Bog Walk in St Catherine has been ordered to pay more than $500,000 after admitting in court that he slapped a police officer during an incident in Linstead.
The accused, Rupert Thompson, appeared before Parish Court Judge Genetta Smikle in the St Catherine Parish Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to several offences.
Thompson was fined $300,000 or face 35 days in prison for assaulting the policeman. He was also fined $250,000 or 30 days’ imprisonment for resisting arrest, along with an additional $1,000 fine or 15 days behind bars for disorderly conduct.
According to court reports, the incident occurred about 8 p.m. on Easter Monday along the Linstead bypass in St Catherine following a motor vehicle crash.
Police officers were reportedly carrying out investigations at the scene when Thompson became agitated and slapped one of the officers across the face.
He was subsequently taken into custody and later charged in connection with the incident.
