Suspected Hantavirus Cases on M/V Hondius Linked to Three Passenger Deaths

CVM has reported a suspected hantavirus outbreak on the Oceanwide Expeditions cruise vessel M/V Hondius.

The ship was travelling from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Cape Verde, and reports indicate three passengers have died, while several other people on board are believed to be infected.

Hantaviruses are spread by rodents in many regions globally, and people are mainly infected after inhaling or ingesting airborne particles from rodent faeces, urine, or saliva.
