Transport Ministry Sets Demerit Suspension Bands for October 2026 Launch

1 min read

After revealing Jamaica’s forthcoming demerit point framework, the Ministry of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications has set out how many points will trigger a driving ban once the scheme starts on October 1, 2026.

Motorists who rack up between 10 and 13 demerit points will be barred from the road for six months. Those holding 14 to 19 points will lose driving privileges for one year, and anyone who hits 20 points or higher will be suspended for two years.

Officials stressed that a suspension only pauses the right to drive for a set period and does not revoke the person’s driver’s licence.
