TVET Engineering Cluster organises three training institutions by industry sector

The TVET Engineering Cluster brings together three training institutions under a single umbrella, each aligned to particular industry needs, according to director principal Eric Nelson. The grouping is made up of the National Tool and Engineering Institute, the Jamaica German Automotive School and the Rockfort Vocational Training Centre.

Nelson said the National Tool and Engineering Institute serves as the main campus for the cluster. He explained that what sets the cluster apart from others is that two of its institutions concentrate on clearly defined sectors.

According to Nelson, the National Tool and Engineering Institute is dedicated to the engineering sector, with a focus on manufacturing. He said the institute trains mechanical and electrical engineers to support manufacturers such as Red Stripe and other local industries.

The Jamaica German Automotive School, which Nelson also referred to as JAGAS, handles training and certification for the logistics and automotive sector. He said its programmes cover engine systems, motor vehicle repairs and related skills, along with warehouse competencies such as forklift operation.

The Rockfort Vocational Training Centre, Nelson said, offers a broader mix of skills. Its current programmes span engineering and construction trades, including welding, electrical work and general construction. The centre also runs training in business administration and customer service, as well as early childhood education and other skill areas that support the sectors served by the cluster.
