Two women killed in separate crashes hours apart

Two women lost their lives in separate motor vehicle crashes on Thursday night, pushing Jamaica's road death toll to 166 since the start of the year.

The victims have been identified as 28-year-old Danique Thomas of Hibernia, Manchester, and Ann-Marie Robinson of Stony Hill, St Andrew.

According to police reports, Thomas died after she allegedly jumped from a moving 1997 Honda Civic along the PJ Patterson Highway near the Vineyard Toll Booth in St Catherine at about 8:20 p.m.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated by the Ferry Police.

Just hours later, Robinson, who was a passenger in a 2019 Toyota Hiace, was fatally injured in a collision involving the Hiace and a 2019 Honda CR-V along Old Stony Hill Road at Long Lane in the Constant Spring area of St Andrew at about 11:50 p.m.

The Constant Spring Traffic Department is investigating that crash.

Meanwhile, the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) said that as of July 16, Jamaica had recorded 150 fatal crashes, resulting in 166 deaths—a 20 per cent decline compared to the corresponding period last year.

The council said that between April and June, the island recorded 75 fatal crashes and 83 road deaths, with speeding remaining the leading cause, accounting for 24 per cent of fatalities.

Motorcyclists accounted for 20 deaths, pedestrians 22, private motor vehicle drivers 21, and private motor vehicle passengers 12.

St Ann recorded the highest number of fatal crashes during the period with 12, followed by St Catherine (10), Westmoreland and Manchester (nine each), and St James (seven). Together, those five parishes accounted for 57 per cent of all road fatalities.

The NRSC has renewed its appeal for motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians to obey the Road Traffic Act, avoid speeding and other dangerous practices, and exercise greater care on the nation's roads.
