US Sets Four-Year Limit for Most New Student and Exchange Visas
The Trump administration has unveiled visa regulations that will replace the existing “duration of status” arrangement for international students and exchange visitors.
Most people receiving new F and J visas will be granted a maximum stay of four years in the United States. Those wishing to remain longer will have to seek an extension.
The measures also shorten the grace period after graduation for many students from 60 days to 30 days. Further provisions govern moves between schools and changes to academic programmes.
US officials say the revised system will improve monitoring of visa holders. Critics contend that fixed time limits could cause difficulties for students completing longer degree programmes.
