WATCH: Serving Jamaica is the most satisfying experience, says Byles

KINGSTON, Jamaica—Outgoing Bank of Jamaica Governor Richard Byles says serving his country through the central bank has been among the most satisfying experiences of his life.

“It was a great honour to serve Jamaica through the Bank of Jamaica, just as much as it was an honor to co-chair EPOC (Economic Programme Oversight Committee). Helping Jamaica is the most satisfying thing that I’ve done in my life. Although I have spent nearly two decades in the private sector, working for the government and country is a wonderful thing, very satisfying,” he told Observer Online following the conclusion of the quarterly meeting of the finance committee in Parliament on Tuesday.

Blyes, whose tenure will come to an end in August, said he plans to take some time to relax but remains willing to contribute his knowledge and experience where needed.

“I’m always open to help in Jamaica, to the extent I can. If my opinion is useful and my experience, I’m happy to contribute. Not in a full-time way,” he added.

Byles said any perspective he may have to improve the central bank would first be discussed with Finance Minister Fayval Williams.

“I feel it’s something that I should discuss with the minister first to put her in the loop of what I am thinking. She and the new governor can take it forward if they wish,” he added.
