World Athletics Sets Four Qualification Routes For Beijing 2027 Championships

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Track and field competitors seeking places at the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China, will have four routes into the September event, World Athletics confirmed on Tuesday.
In releasing the qualifying marks for each discipline, the global governing body said athletes may secure selection by meeting the entry standard inside the approved window, earning a required placing at named competitions, receiving a wild card, or holding a world ranking position when the relevant ranking period closes.
For most events, the qualifying window is scheduled to open on 23 August 2026 and run until midnight on 22 August 2027. World Athletics said separate timelines will apply for road events, race walking and combined events.
The organisation said the Beijing 2027 system will again blend entry standards with world rankings, as used for recent major championships. It aims for about 40 per cent of competitors to qualify through standards, with the remaining 60 per cent coming through the rankings.
World Athletics said the model is intended to keep the championships stocked with the leading athletes in every discipline, while giving value to both standout one-off performances and steady elite-level results across the qualifying period.
