World Cup challenge awaits Caribbean hopefuls after difficult FIFA draw

ZURICH, Switzerland — Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba now know the scale of the challenge awaiting them at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026 after Thursday’s official draw paired the Caribbean nations with some of world football’s emerging powerhouses.

The expanded 48-team competition, which returns to Qatar in November following the success of last year’s inaugural enlarged edition, promises another showcase of the game’s brightest young talents. For the Caribbean representatives, however, the road beyond the group stage appears anything but straightforward.

Reggae Boyz draw demanding group

The young Reggae Boyz were placed in Group E alongside European contenders Italy, African heavyweight Côte d’Ivoire, and dangerous Uzbekistan in what shapes up as one of the tournament’s most balanced yet unforgiving sections.

Italy enters the competition with its trademark tactical discipline and pedigree at youth level, while Côte d’Ivoire is expected to bring the athleticism and attacking power that has long defined West African football.

Jamaica, meanwhile, will rely heavily on pace, energy, and physical intensity as the coaching unit, expected to feature veteran tactician Wendell Downswell and assistant Vassell Reynolds, looks to guide the Caribbean side through a perilous opening round.

Uzbekistan could prove equally dangerous. The Central Asian nation has built a reputation for upsetting more established teams in youth competitions, making every match in the group critical.

Advancing from Group E would represent a major achievement for Jamaica, but Caribbean football has often produced its best moments when expectations are modest and pressure rests elsewhere.

Haiti confronts tournament giants

If Jamaica’s path appears difficult, Haiti’s assignment may be even harsher.

Les Grenadiers were drawn into Group D with two former world champions, France and Uruguay, as well as an improving Saudi Arabian side.

Haiti’s campaign will begin against Uruguay before clashes with France and Saudi Arabia complete a punishing schedule.

The showdown with France is already attracting intrigue because of the strong Caribbean links expected within the French squad. Several Haitian players also compete within the French football system, adding emotional and cultural intensity to what could become one of the tournament’s most compelling group-stage encounters.

Despite the daunting opposition, Haiti’s qualification itself reinforced the nation’s growing reputation in youth football after another impressive regional campaign earlier this year.

Cuba carry Caribbean banner in Group F

Cuba, the third Caribbean representative in the tournament, will compete in Group F against Senegal, Croatia, and Tajikistan.

Senegal enters as one of Africa’s most respected youth programs, while Croatia’s technical structure and tournament experience make them formidable opponents. Tajikistan, though less heralded, has consistently proven capable of causing problems at youth level in Asian competitions.

For Cuba, the draw presents an opportunity to test itself against varied footballing styles from three different continents as the nation seeks to make its mark on the global stage.

Final spots yet to be decided

The tournament line-up is nearly complete, with the final two places to be settled in Saturday’s CAF play-offs between Ethiopia and Mozambique, and Uganda against Ghana.
