Garvey Maceo High crash leaves students under medical review, ministry says

The Ministry of Education says it is keeping watch on the situation after 39 Garvey Maceo High School students were involved in a motor vehicle crash earlier today.
According to the ministry, medical teams examined the students and 23 have since been released. Three students were admitted for continued treatment and observation.
Other students are still being treated by health workers. The ministry said some are receiving fluids while they wait for further assessment by medical staff.
Education officials said they have communicated with the school’s leadership and the relevant authorities, and will stay engaged as the matter develops.
The ministry said assistance is being arranged so that students, parents, guardians and staff can get the support they need.
It also reported that its educational social worker for Region 7 in Clarendon went to the hospital to offer emotional support and guidance to the students and their parents.
The regional team is expected to continue working with Garvey Maceo High to help those affected and impacted as they recover from the incident.
Education Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon said she was thankful that several students had been discharged and that she continues to pray for the complete recovery of those still in medical care. She said the ministry will remain in contact with the school and health officials and will share more information once it is confirmed.
The ministry is asking the public to depend on official information, respect the privacy of the students and their families, and keep them in prayer for full recovery.
