Reggae Girlz Captain Natasha Thomas Signs for Wrexham Ahead of Champions League Campaign

4 min read

Reggae Girlz captain Natasha Thomas has signed with Wrexham A.F.C. Women, the reigning Adran Premier champions, ahead of the Welsh club’s first-ever UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign.

The Jamaican international joins after an 11-year spell with Ipswich Town, where she became the club’s all-time leading scorer and record appearance holder. She arrives as Wrexham prepares for its historic European debut later this month.

Ipswich Legend Begins a New Chapter

Thomas began playing football at the age of nine with Waveney before moving to Lowestoft Town. In 2015, she joined Ipswich Town, where she spent the next 11 years establishing herself as one of the club’s greatest-ever players.

During her 11 seasons at Ipswich, Thomas made 260 appearances and scored 175 goals, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer and record appearance holder while helping it climb the English women’s football pyramid.

Off the pitch, Thomas also worked as a gym instructor and served as a trustee of the Ipswich Town Foundation, reflecting her commitment to supporting young people and giving back to the community.

After leaving Ipswich in May 2026, she now begins a new chapter with Wrexham A.F.C. Women, bringing a wealth of experience, leadership and goalscoring ability to the Welsh champions.

Speaking to Jamaicans.com about the move, Thomas said:

“From grassroots football to becoming a professional, and from childhood dreams to representing Jamaica, what a journey.

I’m over the moon to sign for such an ambitious and successful club. Wrexham’s heritage and culture are second to none, and I’m proud to be part of it.

Can’t wait to get started and to be competing with this club in the Champions League!”

Proud to Represent Jamaica

Born and raised in England, Thomas qualifies to represent Jamaica through her grandparents. Receiving her first Reggae Girlz call-up in 2024 fulfilled a lifelong dream and carried special significance for her family.

Thomas reflecting on what it meant to represent the country of her grandparents, says, “They’d be proud looking down on me.” She honours their memory by carrying photographs of them in her shin pads every time she takes the field.

Recalling her first call-up, she added:

“I always dreamt it when I was younger. People always say if you don’t dream these things, then they can’t come true. It has all just come at the right time for me and my family. Of course I’m nervous, but at the same time, it is a massive opportunity for me and I can’t wait to grab it with both hands.”

Thomas made her international debut against France in October 2024 and has since earned six caps and scored three goals. Her performances and leadership have since seen her named captain of the Reggae Girlz.

Wrexham’s Rapid Rise

Thomas joins a Wrexham A.F.C. Women side that has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past few years.

The women’s team was originally established in 2003 and was among the founding members of the Welsh Premier Women’s League in 2009. However, the club folded during the 2015-16 season because of a shortage of players.

Wrexham A.F.C. Women were reformed in 2018 before undergoing a major revival following fresh investment in 2021. Since then, the club has climbed through the Welsh football pyramid to become one of the country’s leading semi-professional women’s teams.

That rapid rise culminated last season when Wrexham won the Adran Premier, the top division of women’s football in Wales, securing the club’s first qualification for the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Thomas joins fellow summer signings Lucy Farrell and Mikayla Cook as Wrexham looks to build on its domestic success and make an impact on the European stage.

Jamaica Football Federation Shares Congratulations

Following the announcement, the Jamaica Football Federation congratulated Thomas in a social media post, writing:

“Reggae Girl Natasha Thomas has joined Wrexham FC in the Adran Premier, the first tier of women’s football in Wales. All the best & One Love.”

For Jamaican football supporters, Thomas’s move marks another milestone for a Reggae Girl making her mark in European football. For Wrexham A.F.C. Women, it brings an experienced international, prolific goalscorer and national team captain to a squad preparing for the biggest season in the club’s history.
